Who Has the Better Clown Painting?

My son Willie came to visit this past weekend and brought a gift for my birthday. It was in his car trunk and when he opened it I saw this cool clown painting from the 50's, but he said he had bought that one for his friend because he was into clowns. He then showed me my gift, but I told him I liked the clown art better. Willie had this funny look on his face like, "how can I tell my Dad that he can't have that one." He was definitely torn. I said, "look, I'll put a clown on the artwork you got for me, then your friend will have an original artwork from me. Hmmmmm?
"Willie seemed ok with it so now I have the cool clown painting and his friend has an original Forest Clown.

Straus Family Creamery

This is the video that I've been working on for Raley's about Straus Creamery. Heather and I went to Tomales Bay one weekend to shoot some footage and while we were there a cow broke through the fence. It was pretty funny. We had a great time and the food at Nick's Cove was awesome. You've gotta go there.

Today is my Birthday!

So this is what I did today:
1. Edited a video for work
2. Eat some pre-lunch ice cream
3. Went to the studio to meet Collect Art. They're returning my work from MoAD.
4. Paint for an hour.
5. Go home and edit more video.
6. Eat last nights left-over chicken and boil yams for Coco.
7. Wash the huge amount of pots and dishes (It took almost an hour)!
8. Edit video again. Email work.
9. Go get an inflatable queen mattress from Target.
10. Walk to a Dry Cleaners to beg for a coat hanger
11. Use coat hanger to break into Heather's car because I locked the keys in it at Target.
12. Drive to Raley's for mineral water, milk bananas and pizza.
13. Realized on the way home I forgot the pizza.
14. More editing and emailing.
15. Play with Coco.
16. Put Coco to bed.
17. Eat pizza that Heather ordered from Mountain Mike's.
18. Watch American Idol.
19. Fool around.
20. Go to bed.

It was a good day! I think I'll do the dame next year.

On the way into the studio, I stopped by the side of the road to see if these ospreys were nesting on top of this huge crane on Mare Island. They had build one last year and I was wondering if they were planning to do the same this year. I think they are. When I stopped, the osprey stood up, took flight and soared over towards me like he was checking me out. It was very cool and it came right over the top of my car about 30 feet in the air. I'll be posting photos to show the nests progress and hope to shoot some video too. Stay posted.

As you can see the painting on paper has changed. Not sure if I'll do anything else as I can't keep my damn hands off pieces. I'm stuck on 2 paintings right now so I'm just having fun cranking out nonsense. They're fast and fill the void created by frustration and runnin' on idea empty!

Old Studio in Benicia

Found this photo too. It's my very small studio space that I shared in Benicia at the Arsenal. Manuel Neri has a studio down the street that he shared once with Robert Arneson.

Old Sacramento Studio

I was looking through some old photos and found this one taken in my old studio in Sacramento. The painting rack was made from metal studs. Very cool, but it had to stay when I moved. This was the beginning staged of Western Exterminator.

2 New Paintings in Progress

These are 2 new paintings that I'm still working on. Also a detail of the 40" x 50" painting. Got that one from a local thrift shop. Went into SF today to buy more religious imagery at a shop in the Mission. Stay tuned!

New Painting

Here's a small painting I finished..at least I think so. It's about 2 x 2 feet. Still need to live with it for a while. Looking forward to getting back into the groove so I can crank.

MoAD Exhibit extended

The exhibit at MoAD has been extended due to it's great response so go and see it if you haven't already. The museum is offering FREE admission for the month of February in honor of Black History Month.

Website Pain in the Ass!

Ok, I am no web master so the other day when I was trying to clean up my site, I created my first website nightmare! For about 5 days my website was down and I was trying everything that I knew how to do to get the bastard up and running again. Thank goodness I saved a previous version last year when I uploaded some new info. I trashed my site and uploaded it to find it solved the problem.

Note to self... Throw away any new updates and download a copy of what I have. Now all I need to do is add the new work that I was trying to upload in the first place!

MoAD Artist Panel Discussion, Jan. 24, 2009

Yah, that's me fixin' my glasses...I'm not pickin' my nose!
I really wasn't expecting to be a part of it, but was politely talked into it.
Great discussion amongst the artists and the audience. I always leave panel discussions or lectures wondering if I said the right thing. With my short attention span, I need more time to think about an answer. I'm getting older!



Heather felt I had to represent, so she got me this hat...since she lost my hat from the Corcoran Museum in DC. Thanks babe!

MoAD Reception, January 23, 2009

I was really surprised at the number of people who came out to see the show at MoAD Friday evening and party with the artists. Met alot of great people and artists in the show, not to mention all my good friends who came out. I really appreciate your support! The exhibit was curated by Erica Agyeman and Demetri Broxton and runs till March 8th.

My painting made a nice backdrop for the DJ. I think the curators might have been a bit worried during installation. It nestled in there with just enough breathing room. I wish I had better lighting in my studio. I'm always shocked when I see my paintings in a gallery setting.

Getting Back to Work!

Kind of strange getting back into the studio. This painting is coming along and should be done soon. I think I'm still feeling a bit lazy from all the time off. Got a call from a good friend who invited me to show in Fresno in July. With that, it's time to ramp up.

MOAD

Stopped by MoAD (Museum of the African Diaspora) this past Saturday and picked up some announcements. While I was there I ran up to the second floor to see how my painting looked installed. I was wondering how a 10 foot tall painting would look on a 12 foot tall wall. Well, I think it looks fine and it's in a great spot. As you come up to the second floor from the stairs and turn right, there it is directly in front of you on the far wall. Here's the scoop on the exhibit.
