Intellectual Pirate

Osprey on the way to the studio

I shot this on the way to the studio. The osprey have come back again this year to build their nest and raise their young at the top of a huge crane on Mare Island in Vallejo.. There are a pair of raven nesting below and often they try to get up to the top to raid the osprey nest.

Recent Work and Paintings in Progress

These are the paintings I'm currently working on right now.

Here are two paintings that I brought back to the studio to finish up. Now I just need some time with them.

Today was definitely the hottest day so far. Fortunately the studio stays really cool so it was a relief to be out of the heat. These are two small drawings on plywood in the original frames. When I got them they had needle points on them.

Painting in Progress

Sad Penis No.5

Back in the studio tonight, finally, to knock this out and work on a painting still in progress. Trying to get it done for my show in the cafe at SFMOMA, middle of May. We'll see.

After Twilight

A few weeks ago I was asked by a San Francisco gallery if I would be willing to loan this painting, Christonite, to be used as a prop for a movie. I thought...sure, that sounds interesting. Well as it turned out, the movie was called, "New Moon," the follow up of Twilight. A movie I had no clue about, but was filled in by my teenage daughter Jazmine. So the painting was shipped to Vancouver where they were filming and arrived intact. The director loved it and the set designer loved it, but then a few days later I received a call from the gallery that the production company wouldn't be using the painting after all. The gallery was really upset. I was bummed too. The reason...

All I can say is... vampires are really afraid of Superman!

Never Know Where Your Art Will End Up

This afternoon I received an email from a gal in Willow, CA who purchased a painting of mine and decided to contact me. Apparently an old business card was on the back. So from her description the work was from around 2001-2002 when I did these white on black paintings on paper. She really just wanted to know the story behind it. I emailed her the story about my father's Alzheimer's and the symbolism in the work. She emailed me back this evening and said she bought it in an antique/collectable shop in Willow. I'm thinking that it was originally sold in SF. She said the owner of the shop got things from estate sales so who knows. At least it has a new home.

Who Has the Better Clown Painting?

My son Willie came to visit this past weekend and brought a gift for my birthday. It was in his car trunk and when he opened it I saw this cool clown painting from the 50's, but he said he had bought that one for his friend because he was into clowns. He then showed me my gift, but I told him I liked the clown art better. Willie had this funny look on his face like, "how can I tell my Dad that he can't have that one." He was definitely torn. I said, "look, I'll put a clown on the artwork you got for me, then your friend will have an original artwork from me. Hmmmmm?
"Willie seemed ok with it so now I have the cool clown painting and his friend has an original Forest Clown.
